The fighting in the city began at around dawn, when security forces attempted to use air-dropped weapons to capture an area of the central town, in the district of the Din al-Qadisiyah area, however the gunmen fired on the forces, causing casualties among the officers. The government forces, in cooperation with the Peshmerga forces, entered the town’s central neighborhoods, where the gunmen have taken control, also they broke into several of their hideouts, while the gunmen are still holding the remaining civilians and kidnapped hostages. The siege began on Wednesday evening, when the gunmen stormed the provincial council building and took control of the main roads, and the city’s outskirts, also they seized the finance department and the office of the governor of the province. According to the security officials, the gunmen have taken more than five hundred kidnapped civilians, as well as the kidnapped employees of the governor and the head of the provincial council, and they are demanding a sum of 200 billion Dinars as ransom for their release, in addition to freeing the hostages they are keeping.
